In a world of power and chaos a virus hit killing all the adults. In order to survive the children and teenagers join together in tribes, fighting day by day and trading whatever they have. They give themselves new names and create their own rules. Some tribes are power hungry and malevolent, while others just tries not to make the same mistakes as the adults did.
Some tribes had central roles in the story, The mall is in the city but sometimes it is hard to access and therefore the mallrats are mostly safe from the outside world. The mallrats welcomes anyone who is willing to join them in their quest to make a better world, create some order and stability.
The mallrats spent mostly throughout the whole series 1 and 2 inside the mall and never venturing out, but there was a time when they heard about the nomads, and the tribal gathering.
